August 27th is National Guinea Pig Day. If you are looking for a gentle, friendly, easy-to-take-of pet, I highly recommend a Guinea pig.

August 27th is National Guinea Pig Day and in honor of this auspicious occasion, I wanted to share my family’s experiences with Guinea pigs.

This is Larry.

He was our current Guinea pig.  He passed away suddenly a few weeks ago. We are so sad because he was so sweet. They are terrific pets, full of personality. But, if you have piggies of your own, or are thinking about getting one, I highly recommend it!

Look at that face!  What’s not to love?

We had him for 5 years.  We had our first Guinea pig, Penny, for 5 years, too, so we know a thing or two about raising them.

And, after 10 years of piggie experience,  I am here to tell you that if you are looking for a gentle, friendly, easy-to-take-of pet, you can’t go wrong with a Guinea pig.

They have big personalities and make great pets. Larry purred when we petted him and jumped around like a bucking bronco when he got his favorite treats (like grapes and cherry tomatoes).

So celebrate National Guinea Pig Day by reading more about piggies and their care in this post:

Guinea pigs: the perfect pet!

Celebrate National Guinea Pig day with your piggie by giving them a present.

A new hay box!

Since a big part of a Guinea pig’s diet is Timothy hay, give them a simple hay box so they can munch to their heart’s content.

Did you know hay is a key part of a Guinea pig's diet? They need it for digestion and tooth growth. So, here is an easy way to make a Guinea pig hay box!

Have you ever had a pet Guinea pig?  Do you have one (or more ) now?  They are all so different and have their own personalities.  Send me a picture or tell me about your piggy’s personality.  I’d love to hear from you. 🙂
